In this novel, Heyer turns a common romantic convention upside down. While we're often seeing the characters who are suffering from mental illness turn to sex, gambling, or drink but this time it's the heroine who fights an internal struggle. Leonie is an individual who has lived as a man for the majority of her life. She is reluctant to become an adult again. avon books online finds her difficult to deal with, but Avon can control his usual biting sarcasm to take good care of the woman.

Heyer did a great job of juxtaposing Leonie's youthful manners with Avon's coolness and reserved. His calm and collected manner of conduct is starkly different from her impulsive physical reactions and blood-lust. I also enjoyed how he defeated the villain without threat or chasing him; instead using insinuation and storytelling.

Heyer subtilly emphasized the limitations women face in this time. Leonie is not keen on trading in her breeches and Avon book September 2023 riding side-saddle to wear layers of skirts, petticoats and dresses. She also refuses to ride on the side saddle and shoots enemies (despite it being a hazardous job). While Avon is somewhat irritated by her erratic ways at first but Avon soon realizes that she is a true love.

I did find it difficult to remember who was who at the beginning, since Heyer refers to the Duke by several different names in the first few pages. Once you figure it out, the book becomes much more comprehensible. The book was amazing and I would highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed regardless of whether you're a Georgette Heyer lover or just like a good romance!

Avon's Relationship to Davenant

Avon is well-known for its beauty products, but it also offers a chance to earn and is a major advocate for women's financial independence. Avon has been in business for more than 130 years and has always stood up for innovation and optimism, and most importantly for women. It recognizes that beauty goes beyond just finding the right shade of lipstick for the customer. Avon was there to help during the time of Leonie’s kidnapping and ensured that she and Rupert were secure. He even bought them a brand new wardrobe and some nice jewelry to help them feel more confident in their ability to earn money through sales. While many of the people who are ton convinced that it's just Avon's latest affectation, they soon start to notice the changes in his manner of conduct. He is now treating Leonie with a lot more respect, does not use his sarcastic sarcasm to bite her often, and even ensures she's dressed in black to match his outfit.

Avon is no longer able, due to his new character, to keep Leonie's love affair secret from the Duke. He also has begun to treat Rupert with a bit more care. He doesn't try to make her jealous of his bond with Leonie but he does gently warn her to be more careful about her relationships in the near future.
