Avon Books - A Brief History

Avon Publications was founded in 1941 by the American News Company as a paperback publisher. The company began by focusing on comics, but then expanded to other genres, including romance.

Avon is now owned by HarperCollins, which also owns Harlequin. Their Diamond Anniversary is currently underway.

Avon Publications

Avon Books was a major competitor to the more literary Pocket Book Company in the beginning of the paperback publishing industry. Avon published romances, westerns and mysteries with vibrant covers. Their books were cheaper than Pocket books and were targeted at women who could read between cooking and Books Online cleaning.

Avon published digest-format paper (the size of the current short story magazines) in series like Murder Mystery Monthly, Avon Fantasy Reader and many more. These editions contained many authors that are sought-after by collectors today such as A. Merritt, James M. Cain and H. P. Lovecraft.

Avon sold over 20 million books each year by the mid-1950s. The 25-cent "G series contained popular genres like westerns, whodunits and boy-meets girl stories. Avon had a 35 cent "T" series that featured the usual suspects such as science fiction, mystery, and the like.

The company's emphasis on popularity led them to publish ghost stories, sexually-suggestive love stories and fantasy novels in the beginning years, which were far removed from the more literary Pocket competition. In 1959, Avon was bought by the Hearst Corporation and the focus shifted toward more mainstream literature.

Today, Avon is the world's largest woman-centric beauty and fiction business with representation on five continents and in more than 100 countries. Avon is a leading publisher for Sunday Times and Kindle bestsellers. They are a leader in suspense, thrillers, crime and suspense. Avon Impulse

Hearst Corporation purchased the company in 1959. Hearst focused on the company's romance offerings and it grew into one of the biggest publishers of this genre. The company continued to release inexpensive paperbacks with popular themes, such as westerns and whodunits. However, the focus on romance helped increase their profit.

Avon still publishes romance novels. Avon Impulse is a digital imprint that offers paperbacks and ebooks. The imprint accepts submissions from writers who aren't represented by an agent. It allows authors to explore their creative potential without worrying about the reaction of the publishing industry.

Avon Impulse offers a 25 percent royalty on the first 10,000 downloads and then 50 percent royalty on all subsequent sales. The editor edits the book and designs the cover, which is sexy. The book is available for Kindle and Nook users as well as in the ePub format.

Avon and Harper Collins merged in 1999. Avon's non-romance hardcover and paperback collections were transferred to Morrow, which is the sister imprint of Harper Collins. This left Avon publishing romance novels. The publishing house eventually was renamed Avon Books and today is still an important part of the HarperCollins family.
