What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep kits are an excellent way to fix up your gear until you get to the trailhead and get it repaired professionally. The problem is knowing what to do with it if you ever need it.

Tools

It is crucial to have the proper tools on hand when you are out in the field. This kit was developed with this in mind and includes all the hand tools required to repair things in the field. The tools are made of metal with a minimum of plastic to ensure they will stand up to use. The kit includes an afghan-like pouch with zippered for the coalcracker tools, a twist awl, reamer cutting shears and gimlets (5MM). It also includes a bottle of coalcracker oil with illustrated instructions and a wooden spool an reamer, and a twist Awl.

Repair Patches

You might want to consider adding adhesive patches to your kit if there are some holes in your gear. These tough patches have an ultra-high-performance adhesive that is applied to a tough polyurethane back that allows a tear to recover under pressure. These patches are available in color or rep kit clear versions. They offer durability against punctures as well as sun, moisture and extreme temperatures.

If your kit isn't stocked with any of the above products, consider adding a bag with waterproof Aquaseal wader repair sealant. This water-tight adhesive can be bonded to fabrics and metals to provide an indestructible fix. This glue is ideal for repairing drysuits and can also be used in the field. Let the sealant sit for up to 12 hours to cure before you can use the repaired equipment.

The essential field fabric kit for packs, tents and rainwear made of silicone-impregnated polyester. The kit comes with one Clean Tape patch and a sil-nylon repair sample as well as a 1/4 ounce tube of Goretex Silfix repair adhesive, sealant and brush. Apply patch to clean smooth, smooth surface. Make sure there is a minimum of 1/2 inch overlap. Remove release paper from patch surface and rub the adhesive with moderate pressure (adhesive side down).
